Graham Parker

An Acoustic Evening With

Graham Parker is a British singer-songwriter best known for his fiery vocals and sharp lyrics as frontman of Graham Parker & the Rumour, a band that helped define the pub rock and new wave scenes of the 1970s.

Born on November 18, 1950 in Hackney, East London, Parker grew up in Surrey and began performing in local bands during his teens. In 1975, while working as a petrol pump attendant, he placed an ad in Melody Maker seeking collaborators, which led to the formation of Graham Parker & the Rumour—a group of seasoned pub rock musicians including Brinsley Schwarz and Bob Andrews.

Their debut album Howlin’ Wind (1976), produced by Nick Lowe, showcased Parker’s blend of rock, soul, reggae, and R&B, drawing comparisons to artists like Van Morrison and Bob Dylan. Known for his impassioned delivery and working-class persona, Parker became a cult favorite, influencing contemporaries such as Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson.

Though mainstream chart success eluded him, Parker’s career has spanned five decades, marked by critically acclaimed albums, dynamic live performances, and occasional literary pursuits. He remains a respected figure in British rock, celebrated for his uncompromising artistry and enduring influence.
